Abadan Faculty of Petroleum Introduction

INTRODUCTION

Abadan Faculty of Petroleum (Shahid Tondgouyan) was first established in 1939 under the name “Abadan Institute of Technology (AIT)” to train skilled technical staff for Iranian oil industry in Abadan. The educational programs have been developed and updated ever since according to the demands of the industry. Our mission is to educate engineers for the petroleum industry at the undergraduate and graduate levels and perform research that enhances the state-of-the-art in petroleum technology. Currently, the Abadan Faculty of Petroleum engineering admits undergraduate and graduate students in various fields related to professions in oil industry:

Department of Petroleum Exploration Engineering

This Petroleum Geoscience course pathway meets industry's demands for skilled personnel by training graduates with specialist, research-based knowledge in appraisal, development and production as well as the fundamentals of reservoir engineering. The course also introduces the tools to undertake a sedimentary basin analysis to characterize a trap as a hydrocarbon reservoir, calculate the reserve and estimate the economic worth of the prospect. The main course subjects include geoscience topics, such as geophysics, geochemistry, structural and petroleum geology, mineralogy and petrology, and petroleum engineering topics including reservoir engineering, petrophysics, rock and fluid properties, drilling operation and reservoir simulation.

Graduates of the program must demonstrate the following:

-       Becoming familiar with oil field data comprising well data, seismic, test data, pressure data, economic data, etc.

-       Being able to produce depositional facies maps, reservoir, sources and seal maps.

-       Becoming familiar with basin modeling to determine hydrocarbon charge.

-       Being able to prepare a plan for the optimal execution of exploration operation.

-       Being able to calculate the hydrocarbon reserve using deterministic and stochastic methods.

-       Being aware of the various skills, disciplines, techniques and tasks used in the appraisal, development and operation of an oil and gas field.

-       Having a basic grounding in Petroleum Economics to assess the value of a prospect.

Department of Technical Inspection Engineering

Department of Technical Inspection Engineering was established in 1991 at Petroleum University of Technology. This department supervises Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Technical Inspection Engineering degree programs. The mission of the department of Technical Inspection Engineering has three elements:

-       To provide excellent instruction and design experiences essential for graduates to enter the practice of technical inspection for petroleum industry.

-       To conduct research that generates, communicates, and applies new knowledge for the betterment of society.

-       To foster a spirit of service and leadership among students and assist the public in addressing issues concerning the use of resources, protection of the environment, and development of infrastructures.

Graduates of the program must demonstrate the following:

-       Being able to perform technical inspection of pipelines and machinery.

-       Bing able   to define technical inspections policies and formulate the respective plans considering operational programs of the districts.

-       Reviewing incidents and accidents in pipelines, pump stations, installation, and advising solutions to problems.

-       Performing inspection and quality control of plans in construction phase.

-       Overseeing oil products delivery, measurement, and control.

-       Studying and formulating methods of maintenance, repair and operation of installation, and machinery of the company.

-       Performing crude oil and oil products quality and quantity controls.

Department of Chemical Engineering

Training of chemical engineers is an important issue for the oil and gas industry in Iran due to the existence of oil and gas reservoirs, the need to convert the produced oil and gas into chemical and petrochemical products, and the importance of environmental pollution and process control. Students learn to use a combination of mathematical, physical and chemical science concepts within a rigorous engineering design framework, graduating with a unique set of skills highly valued by a wide range of employers in industry, academia, and the government.

Graduates of the program must demonstrate the following:

-       Ability to apply knowledge of chemical engineering fundamentals to identify and solve chemical engineering problems.

-      Ability to identify and solve problems related to safety and environmental issues as an integral part of the chemical engineering profession.

-       Ability to perform step-by-step design of engineered systems and chemical processes.

-       Ability to apply mathematics relevant to engineering and the physical and chemical sciences to identify and solve technical problems.

-       Ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.

-       The knowledge of computers and information technology necessary to function effectively as chemical engineers.

-       Understanding of current technological issues related to chemical engineering.

Department of Safety and Technical Protection Engineering

While the number of incidents is increasingly growing in different parts of societies, organizations ought to have a modern safety program to counter this trend. Many organizations are now taking steps to increase awareness and improve knowledge of employees related to health, safety and the environment. The aim of this course is to provide high quality training to the students and employees and help them to increase their level of knowledge to internationally recognized HSE standards. Increased level of awareness towards HSE concepts inculcates a sound Health & Safety culture within an organization which positively affects its productivity and performance with reduced risk levels.

Graduates of the program must demonstrate the following:

-                    Ability to evaluate soil and air pollutions protection systems.

-                    Ability to design Fire & Gas detection and protection systems.

-                    Ability to design and operate water& waste water treatment systems.

-                    Ability to implement & evaluate Health, Safety & Environment Management Systems.

-                    (HSE MS), such as HSE policies evaluate, HSE risk assessment, audit of HSE MS.

-                    The knowledge of General& Process safety design.
