Faculty of Nautical Science was
founded in 1985 in Mahmudabad, Mazandaran on the southern coast of Caspian Sea
in Iran. It was first dedicated to training competent human resource for
maritime industries. However, the demand of oil industries for offshore oil
exploration and for competent human resource in offshore industries made the
faculty focus on research and education in this field. The faculty offers
long-term undergraduate and graduate academic programs as well as short-term
training courses.
Given the
importance of quality of educational services, the faculty was granted with ISO
9001:2008 Quality Management System Certificate from the institute of AAP
International to ensure its continuous quality improvement.

Department of Marine Engineering
The department offers one graduate program – Coastal and
Marine Structures Engineering– and one undergraduate program – Marine
Engineering.
It is of vital importance to continuously extract rich oil
resources from marine oil fields. Therefore, expertise needs to be developed
about the design and manufacturing of oil drilling structures as well as
inspection and maintenance of these structures and offshore structures. The
objective of this program is to educate competent human resources with a sound
knowledge of designing, manufacturing and installing offshore oil structures as
demanded by oil industries.
At the end of the program, the graduates would be able to
take the following responsibilities:
-
Utilizing and maintaining oil drilling structures
and oil and gas pipelines,
-
Designing, installing and maintaining all oil
drilling, transfer and storage structures, equipment and machineries,
-
Providing consulting services in the field of oil
offshore and marine structures and cooperating in designing and monitoring
relevant projects,
-
Cooperating with ministries and organizations
(e.g. Petroleum Ministry, Roads Ministry, Power Ministry) responsible for civil
projects in the field of oil offshore structures, and
-
Monitoring the related technical projects.
Iran has a very long coastline with invaluable sea-based
and shore-based energy resources utilization of which
requires the installation and operation of the relevant structures. The
goal of Marine Engineering program is to educate graduates for performing
engineering work in the marine sector or marine-related shore-based industries
involving the design, production, operation, maintenance, and management of
engineering systems and projects. Career opportunities of various kinds (e.g.
operational, management, leadership, etc.) are available for the graduates of
this program who are ideally suited for working on ships, at port facilities,
and at shore and offshore facilities, particularly in power generation,
distribution, and concomitant auxiliary support systems. They are equipped with a
background for work in many areas of maritime industry, both at sea and ashore,
as well as in non-maritime industries such as public utilities and manufacturing
and offshore structures.
The graduates of the program can take the following
responsibilities:
-
Marine engineering on commercial ships
-
Planning and monitoring the maintenance of
systems of commercial ships
-
Working in shipbuilding companies and the related
technical and maintenance units
-
Working in offshore industries
This department
offers one graduate program – Energy Systems Engineering.
The activities of
economy sectors (manufacturing and services) are made possible by energy
consumption. On the other hand, the growing demand for energy is mainly met by
the development of energy supply systems of fissile energy resources which can
be sustained at best until the end of the current century. However, this
reliance on fissile energy resources would accelerate the depletion of these
invaluable resources and the emission of pollutants into the environment. In
addition, our economy is highly dependent on the export of fissile energy, and
therefore, highly sensitive to global energy market fluctuations. The close
relationship between energy sector and the economical, social and technical
changes and the wide impact of scientific and technical evolutions on energy
technologies, as well as the impact of the production and consumption of energy
carriers on environment, invokes the design, development and utilization of
energy systems on the basis of an understanding of various dimensions of the
interaction between energy systems and other technical, economical, social and
environmental fields; for which it is necessary to systemically analyze the
development of energy sector and the design of energy-consuming systems.
Energy Systems
Engineering is an interdisciplinary program aimed at designing, developing and
utilizing energy systems on the basis of a systemic view to these systems in
which the economical, social, environmental and technological impacts are
emphasized to be considered. The graduates are expected to be equipped with the
knowledge required to accept relevant responsibilities in refineries, power
plants, transportation industries, utility designing of buildings, Petroleum
Ministry, National Iranian Oil Company, National Iranian Gas Company, Power
Ministry, Planning and Budget Organization, Environmental Protection
Organization and all companies related to the production and distribution of
energy carriers.
Energy Systems
Engineering is composed of theoretical and technical scientific courses for
training energy experts with a good knowledge of designing, developing and
utilizing energy extraction, processing, transformation, transfer, distribution
and utilization systems.
The graduates are
trained to acquire the skills required for the following responsibilities:
-
Designing and developing technical systems of
processing, transformation and the technologies of energy saving and controlling
environmental pollution,
-
Managing energy at micro and macro level (at
production, regional and national level),
-
Sectional, regional and national energy planning,
-
Planning and managing processing and energy
conversion units,
-
Conducting research on energy, and
-
Providing scientific and technical support for
energy sector institutions.

Short-term training courses
With a rich experience in holding short-term training
courses, the faculty is regarded as one of the best training centers for
enriching the technical knowledge of human resources of all organization,
particularly those working in oil industries. These courses are offered around
six main categories:
1.
On-employment courses including all courses
required by a newly-employed individual to
start his/her career,
2.
On-the-job oil, gas, and petrochemical courses
including rigid and rotating equipments, technical software, map reading, towers
and convertors, etc.
3.
HSE courses including safety and firefighting,
first aid, etc.
4.
Management courses including strategic
management, supervising, risk management, knowledge management, crisis
management, work psychology, etc.
5.
Maritime technical courses.
It is known that 30% of global oil and gas resources are
underneath the sea bed. It should be noted that offshore resources growingly
need to be utilized while most oil and gas resources are located in offshore
regions and the land-based hydrocarbon reservoirs are growingly depleted. The
role of building marine equipments and structures is undeniable in continuous
production and earning income from these resources. On the other hand, given the
need for developing the research in offshore industries, offshore research
centers are in a close cooperation with large-scale oil companies around the
world in order to meet the demands of countries having oil and gas marine
fields.
Therefore, the faculty triggered research activities in
this field by founding Research Center of Oil and Gas Offshore Industries with
the following objectives:
-
Sustainable development of oil and gas offshore
industries including energy optimization and environmental protection
-
Meeting the operational needs of these industries
-
Conducting practical oil and gas industry
researches
The Research Center is composed of three research groups
including marine structures, oil equipment design and buildup, and energy
management and engineering and HSE.
The faculty is equipped with a rich source of information
in its library as well as a computer center and the workshops and laboratories
which can be used during training courses.
The library has about 10, 000 books out of which about 6000
are in Persian and 4000 in English. It also has about 2000 e-books in the oil,
gas, energy as well as offshore structures. The search in the library, both in
hard and electronic copies, is possible over the Internet. The library revises
its database annually eliminating the outdated publications and procuring the
updated literature. The students also have access to some internationally
well-known online databases, e.g. Sciencedirect.
The faculty has laboratories, simulators, and workshops as
follows:
-
Simulators of diesel engine, steam turbine,
electronic boiler, inert gas, power, and marine communications.
-
Laboratories of energy, vibration, PLC,
mechanics, thermodynamics, and precision tools, and
-
Workshops of engine, chiseling, welding,
first-aid, auxiliary machineries, and marine utilities and equipment.
The computer center of the faculty is equipped with optimal
fiber and wireless internet network throughout the faculty with a broadband
private DATA 4 MB-wide line. It supports all computing requirements of the
faculty, Internet network and computer-equipped classes. The local network is
available in dormitories both through cable connection as well as wireless
system.
